๐Ÿพ Found a Lost Pet?

๐Ÿ“ Our Microchip Scanning Stations:

  • 4713 Stratford Ave.
  • 55 N. Ridgeview Drive
  • 6742 East Washington Street

How to scan a lost pet

๐Ÿ“ Step 1: Contain the Pet

Make sure the pet is safe and secure. โ€œFoundโ€ means the pet is in your possession.

๐Ÿ“ Step 2: Make a Found Report

Post a clear photo of the pet on multiple outlets:

  • Indy Lost Pet Alert
  • Nextdoor
  • PawBoost
  • Indy Pets: Lost & Found (Facebook group)

โš ๏ธ Important: Do not show collars, harnesses, leashes, or unique markings in your photos. Require anyone claiming the pet to provide proof of ownership (photos, vet records, ID that matches microchip registration).

๐Ÿ” Step 3: Scan for a Microchip

Take the pet to a local animal shelter, veterinary clinic, pet store, or one of our Microchip Scanning Stations for a free scan.

  • If a chip is found, the registry may contact the owner directly or provide you with their info.
  • Always require proof of ownership before returning the pet.
  • If no chip is found, you may:

    • Hold the pet for the county stray hold period (14 days in Marion County).
    • If you cannot hold the pet, surrender it to your local shelter so the owner has the best chance of finding them.
    • In Indianapolis, you can also file a report through Request Indy to connect with animal control.

๐Ÿ  Step 4: Notify the Shelter

If you decide to hold the pet, contact your local city/county shelter to file a found pet report. This ensures the case is on record and helps the owner locate them.

๐Ÿ“ข Step 5: Spread the Word

  • Notify nearby shelters in surrounding counties (pets can travel).
  • Speak with neighbors and local businesses where the pet was found.
  • Place found pet signs in the area, especially at busy intersections.

โš–๏ธ Legal Reminder

It is illegal to keep, rehome, or sell a stray pet without making every effort to locate the owner during the required stray hold period. Always check your local ordinances if you are outside Marion County.
